Safety

Railways and workshops can be dangerous places and Rocks by Rail is no exception.
Safety is everyone’s concern and as a volunteer you should be aware of not only your own safety but also the safety of those around you.

If you decide to undertake volunteer duties at the railway then first and foremost you must obtain and sign for a printed copy of The Rule Book and make yourself aware of and abide by the rules laid out.

Wear appropriate clothing when carrying out volunteer duties:
– Steel toe capped safety boots, preferably ankle supporting.
– Use protective eyewear, helmets, ear defenders and other protective safety equipment for the task.
– Steam locomotive crews must wear clothing suitable for high temperature environments.
– Often overlooked, tie back hair so it does not get trapped in machinery and be aware that jewellery such as necklaces, rings etc can get trapped in machinery and may cause significant injury. If in doubt, remove jewellery when carrying out tasks for your own safety.

If you are unsure about any aspect of safety or use of plant and machinery then STOP and get guidance.
